Bushwick Book Club Seattle returns to Academy Schools to travel to Oz
By Jennifer Sargent

Thanks to a very generous ($5,000) grant from the Charlotte Y. Martin Foundation, the students at Academy Schools will be travelling to Oz this year. As part of this incredible funding opportunity, lower and middle school students went on a field trip in December to see a live performance of The Wizard of Oz at the Seattle Children’s Theatre. Students, teachers and chaperones throughout the audience could be heard singing along to the popular songs we all know and love, and held their collective breath every time the Wicked Witch of the West appeared.

Wizard of Oz Program

This winter, students will read the L. Frank Baum novel to interpret it for themselves as well as analyze other age-appropriate interpretations, including the play and the movie. . . even The Wiz and Wicked. Later in the year, The Bushwick Book Club Seattle will return to Academy Schools for multiple sessions to discuss the book and to create original songs inspired by the students’ Oz perceptions, culminating in a live performance for family and friends.

Academy Schools thanks the Charlotte Martin Foundation for its generous funding of this exciting project that ties literature, drama, music and other academic platforms to a classic tale of wonder. The Foundation is a private, independent foundation dedicated to enriching the lives of youth in the areas of athletics, culture, and education and also to preserving and protecting wildlife and habitat. Their two areas of focus – youth and wildlife – were established by their founder, Charlotte Yeoman Martin, during her lifetime, and continue today as a legacy to her generosity.
