Discovery Academy – Friday the 13th!

There was nothing unlucky at Discovery Academy! Rather, as our campers would call out, “Go fish!”

Yes, you guessed it! The theme for the day was very fishy, and involved all of the senses.

Campers played the card game Go Fish, learned strategies and both the child and adult version – yes, there is an adult version – and maybe a few important social skills as well.

There was lots of coloring going on throughout the day, as the children used brightly colored markers to decorate fish templates in all sizes and shapes. Those who attend the Auction this weekend will have the opportunity to view these fish captured in nets as decorations.

A field trip to the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery provided a good break for the campers where they they learned about the life journey of the Pacific salmon and saw fries and fingerlings (not of the potato variety).

Can you guess what the snack of the day was? If you answered fish and chips, you would be correct!

Later in the day, the campers were introduced to the Japanese art of fish printing – Gyotaku. There was some initial trepidation at the thought of inking and printing on a real fish. But before long, each made a magnificent colorful imprint of a Pacific Rock Cod, with its spiny dorsal fin and great big googly eyes!
