Earlier this month, Academy Schools welcomed graphic designer, illustrator and author, Diane Solvang-Angell. Diane shared her educational journey with Upper School students, highlighting periods of her life between academia and professional experience, transitions in artistic style and media, and her connection to The Design Code. Her conversation with Academy Schools students included a hands-on doodle activity she calls Ideas in Action. You can view some of our doodles on her website by clicking on this link: http://thedesigncode.com/thedesigncode.com/Ideas_in_Action.html.  Each doodle stared with a single dot on a blank file card. Just look where each of our students went with their doodles!… Continue Reading →

Armed with a magnifying glass and a pile of colored pencils, students were charged to find something on the hillside, something natural, to… Continue Reading →

The students in middle school have had several opportunities recently to travel out of the classroom to observe nature as our regional landscape transforms from the monochromatic pallet of winter into the brilliant spectrum of spring. One of our day trips took us to the Kubota Garden in Rainier Beach. This idyllic landscape is the 35 year epic work of Fujitaro Kubota who cleared the land, dug the ponds, cleared overgrowth and planted stunning specimens of shrubs, trees and plants that celebrated his Japanese roots. Our middle school students sketched their preferred ‘scenes’ as part of a larger art project… Continue Reading →

Over the last few weeks, everyone’s attention seems to be outside. Spring has finally arrived. And, spring is always a great source for inspiration in the classroom. In Pre-K, the students and I have talked about flowers blooming…and birds. Lots of birds. Look what they have created!

Inspired by Nature, Assembled in Art

Gather is a word that is often used during Thanksgiving… families and friends gathering to celebrate; the original harvest gathering of English settlers and members of the Wampanoag tribe; “We gather together…” At Academy Schools, Pre-K students were asked to ‘gather’ leaves, pine cones, acorns and other natural materials for a craft project in art class. My husband and I also ‘gathered’ during a recent walk with our dogs in Seward Park. The results of this collective ‘gathering’ truly exemplified fall in the Pacific Northwest. Pre-K students selected the elements they wished to include in their craft project: a natural… Continue Reading →
