Budding Writers in the 3/4/5/ Grade Class

By Ms. Marie Gianola

At the end of November our class began writing their first essays. This was a big change for the students who previously worked on writing personal narratives. Each student chose their own subject, and was able to do research with books and online resources.  We had several lessons about main ideas, details and conclusions.  We looked at many samples written by other students and then we started our first drafts.

Cayla chose “Giant Pandas” as her subject; she wrote an amazing essay that told us all about Pandas and their habitats…..

“Have you ever wondered about what it’s like to be a Panda bear?  Well if you do than I will tell you some facts about a panda and what they do. Pandas are native to China where they are considered a national treasure.  Pandas are endangered, only 1,600 of them live in the wild and 100 of them live in zoos around the world. “

Jack chose “ Hover Boards” as his subject. He wrote an informative piece about a real life hover board, just like the one in the movie “Back to the future”…..

“Hover boards were not real until 2014.  The first time I saw a hover board was in a movie called Back to the Future.  Greg and Jill Henderson are the ones who created the hover board.  Hover boards hover one inch off the ground. They don’t really fly. It makes a magnetic field and pushes itself in the air”

Colby decided to write about “King Cobras”, we learned about where they live, what they eat and how they kill their prey….

“King Cobra snakes are a kind of a reptile. They have forked tongues. Some snakes are big. Snakes shed their skin.  They are shy, they live in the rainforest.”

Jessie chose one of his favorite characters to write about, “Sherlock Holmes”, we are all anxious to hear his final draft so he can share all the important information about this interesting person.

Our next essays will be persuasive letters….so get ready to hear very inspiring arguments for the things our students really, really want.  I am sure they will convince you all how important their requests are and you won’t be able to deny their heartfelt requests….
