Inspired by Nature, Assembled in Art

Gather is a word that is often used during Thanksgiving… families and friends gathering to celebrate; the original harvest gathering of English settlers and members of the Wampanoag tribe; “We gather together…” At Academy Schools, Pre-K students were asked to ‘gather’ leaves, pine cones, acorns and other natural materials for a craft project in art class. My husband and I also ‘gathered’ during a recent walk with our dogs in Seward Park. The results of this collective ‘gathering’ truly exemplified fall in the Pacific Northwest. Pre-K students selected the elements they wished to include in their craft project: a natural… Continue Reading →

What Is Your Totem?

Category: Middle School | November 1st, 2013 | No Comments

Being residents of the great Pacific Northwest, Academy Schools integrates regional study into social studies, history, literature and art. In art, Middle School students were asked to research the animals whose emblems often appear on totem poles from this part of the country and select the one that most embodied their own character and personality. Utilizing the style of our tribesmen, the students created dramatic designs and imagery. Enjoy the results of their creativity!

Story and illustrations by Logan, 5th Grade WARNING: This is not a “Once upon a time” story! One day I was looking at the presidents’ hall in the middle of town. This happened in 1959. So after looking at all the presidents, I decided to go home, and after getting home I was watching TV. My wife, Stickgirl, caught an ad before I could catch it. It was titles “Space Race”. We watched it. Me (and Stickgirl by the way) were surprised to see our president, Dwight D. Stickenhower. Dwight was speaking about the Space Race and that our country… Continue Reading →

Day One – Hello families! We had a great, dirty, sweaty day in the great outdoors today. We went kayaking and saw jellyfish, birds, seals, barges, water taxis, and more.  Some of us got more wet than others. There were lots of smiles. Folfing went well (That’s Frisbee golf, in case you didn’t know). Most of us got at least a little dirty trudging in the woods, some of us got more dirty than others. All of us had fun! Tomorrow, we will be going tide pool exploring and will need water shoes. Day Two – Great day today! At… Continue Reading →

Systems within Systems The Middle School students began looking at major systems in our universe and world that impact one another.  As reported last fall, we began with creating our own solar system and gaining a size perspective using squares of TP to represent scale models.  The results were pretty impressive! In order to create a visual format we found the furthest planets were WAY FAR OUT! We also learned using this scale that the sun would fill our entire Atrium and more! We planned vacations on several of the planets and determined there wasn’t a lot to do and… Continue Reading →

By Amanda Monger I can’t believe how incredibly proud I am of my Rubik’s Club kids! We started off our club in October with many of us not even knowing how to work on a Rubik’s cube. We worked together to learn the patterns we needed to solve the cube. It was always challenging but sometimes frustrating and they stuck with it. We then moved into using our new-found skills to learning how to follow diagrams to create mosaics out of 300 cubes. We had to learn to follow patterns on the Rubik’s Cube, read and follow instructions, work together… Continue Reading →

There are some exciting things are going on. A bear found its way into the classroom. The children are each taking turns taking care of him in class. On the weekends one student takes him home to visit. The children are journaling about the exciting adventures they have with him. After reading the story The Three Bears in the Pacific Northwest we realized that Mr. Bear needed a home and a boy or girl of his own. He is part of our class auction project. The students are turning the journal into a scrapbook and are writing the story of… Continue Reading →
